I love my job, but any job can be demanding at times. I studied Physics, Maths, and PE at A-level and Psychology at As level. I thought that looked more rounded than Physics Maths Chemistry, plus PE was pretty easy. I then did Physics at Uni before joining the Clinical Science training scheme run by the NHS.

My schedule is generally OK, and I try not to take on too much. It’s a balance between doing enough to convince people my role is important and having enough time to do the work I like doing.

Every job is demanding and has busy periods, but honestly it’s amazing what you can get done in a day when you put your mind to it. I think that the most important thing is to enjoy what you do, which means that you don’t mind working hard and don’t get bored doing it. I’ve been pulling things apart to understand how they work since I was little, and that’s now part of what I do at work.

I studied Physics at university, but my colleagues doing similar work studied various types of engineering. Once I was at university, I realised that I was very interested in lasers, and found a PhD course doing something very similar to my current job.

I studied Chemistry, Maths, Biology and English at A-level and Chemistry at Degree level. I was very lucky to come to the Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials for my PhD, where they taught me some Physics too and let me try things out before writing my own PhD project! So that’s how I got here.
