As I recall it, there was once a study that compared cognitive ability in primary school children who were listening to Beethoven compared to silence. They found that the children could concentrate better when listening to music. Other people have found this with all different sorts of music, but there is no evidence of long term effect (once you turn the music off, its effect seems to stop).

I’ve heard that playing music to a baby when it’s in its mother’s womb can calm it down. I didn’t know that it could make babies smarter.
