      No idea. Perhaps to keep their ears warm?

      To protect their heads.

      For example: if they were to crash on take-off, they would want to be able to climb out of the wreckage and have another go. Also, if they were being shot at during their final descent, they would want to maximise their chances of a ‘hit’ by not being killed on the way down.
