0 Question: why do flies buzz ? Keywords: buzz, flies Asked by lafonda to Mike, Pip, Tim, Tom on 4 Jul 2012.
Tim Stephens answered on 4 Jul 2012:
Their wings have to move really fast to let them fly. The sound comes from the fast moving air – remember that sound is just vibrations in the air.
Tom Lister answered on 4 Jul 2012:
Covered well by Tim – mosquitos have little fast moving wings (high frequency – high pitch) compared to bumble bees, whose wings move more slowly (lower frequency/pitch).
