It is produced in a “sac” near the corner of your eye, and comes through your tear ducts into your eyes. What’s amazing is that different types of tears have different functions, tears from when you get dust in your eye just flush out and clean the eye and just contain salts. Tears when you are upset actually contain chemicals in your body that are making you stressed and unhappy, which releases them from the body, which is why you often feel better after a “good cry”.
