I think fertilisers with plenty of Nitrogen in them help grass grow greener, but I don’t think that they are good for the environment. Probably something like compost from your garden, or maybe Comphrey (a plant-based fertiliser) would be good.

Water helps my grass to grow greener, but its not really a fertiliser.

Most environmental problems with fertilisers are from ‘run-off’ ie excess that washes into rivers and water systems. Things like compost or ‘muck’ is decaying, so the release is slower and you don’t get this problem.

So I agree with Tim (again). Commercially made fertilisers contain nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, as these are what most farm and garden soils are lacking in for good plant growth. No idea which one of these is most useful for making it greener, but I imagine you need all 3.
