      A quark is one of the types of elementary particles that make up everything in the universe. The particles that make up atoms (protons and neutrons) are made up of three quarks.

      It’s been a while since I learnt about particle physics – Mike’s probably a better person to ask since he’s worked at CERN, where they try to smash sub-atomic particles up into quarks to learn more about them.
