There have been a number of mass extinctions, usually relating to ice ages or other climatic events. Dinosaurs were huge and mostly cold blooded, so probably died out when the earth cooled (some people say a huge volcanic eruption of meteor impact caused this).

paleontologists (the folks that study dinosaurs) think there was a giant meteorite that hit the earth and caused the temperature to drop because of all the dust that it threw up into the atmosphere. Dinosaurs were cold-blooded and needed a strong sun to keep them warm and alive, so they died out because it got colder.
