      This question might be better answered by Pip, since it’s closer to what she knows about, but I’ll have a stab.
      First, you would try to understand what causes the illness. You might observe the symptoms, or if it was a fatal illness, you might try to dissect the part of the body that was affected. You’d do lots of tests to try and find the cause.
      Then, you’d use your knowledge of what’s worked in the past for similar things, or would look for drugs that react with the cause of the disease to neutralise it. Just like the rest of scientific research, there’s probably lots of experiments that don’t work before you find one drug that is the cure.
