Do they? Probably because it was in a fairy tale – didn’t some creature decide to get to the moon to eat the cheese?

Pip is right. This is a local one to me. A story about some cheese smugglers in Devizes who were trying to avoid paying some tax. They would hide their cheese at the bottom of a pond and fetch it with a rake. When the police came along, they said they were trying to fetch the (reflection of the) moon out from the lake. They looked like simple country folk, and so were left alone. There is a term ‘moonrakers’ too.

Also, the moon looks yellow when it is low in the sky.
